Basketball Tournament Rules

GENERAL FORMAT

  • The tournament uses a single-elimination bracket format: lose once, and you are out. Winners advance until a champion is determined.

  • Matchups will be determined either randomly or by seeding, at the organizer’s discretion.

  • Games are played on a half-court.

  • A coin toss or similar method will decide first possession.

FOULS & OFFICIATING

  • A court monitor or referee will oversee fouls.

  • Excessive or aggressive contact may result in warnings, technical fouls, or disqualification.

  • Players must uphold sportsmanship; repeated violations may result in removal from the tournament.

TIME RULES

  • Game clock runs for 10 minutes.

  • If tied at the end of regulation, overtime is played until one player scores 2 unanswered points.

  • No timeouts allowed, except a 1-minute timeout for injuries.

  • Players must be ready to start their game within 2 minutes of the scheduled time or risk forfeiting.

EQUIPMENT & ATTIRE

  • Players must wear athletic shoes and appropriate sports attire.

  • The organizer provides the basketball.

  • No jewelry or accessories that may cause injury are allowed.

CONDUCT & DISQUALIFICATION

  • Fighting, abusive language, or unsportsmanlike conduct leads to immediate disqualification.

  • All decisions by the tournament organizers are final.

GAME RULES

  • Game Type: First to 11 points OR a 10-minute time limit, whichever comes first.

  • Scoring:

  • 1 point per basket made inside the arc

  • 2 points per shot made behind the arc (if applicable)

  • Winning Margin: Must win by 2 points.

  • Shot Clock: No shot clock; however, stalling may lead to warnings or loss of possession.

Possession

  • Make-it, take-it” applies: scoring player retains possession.

  • After a missed shot, the ball must be cleared beyond the arc before attempting to score again.

  • Clearing requires both the ball and both feet to cross behind the arc line.

  • Defense must clear the ball after securing a rebound on a missed shot.

  • Each possession starts with a check ball at the top of the key.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

  • The final match is played to 15 points.

  • All standard rules apply unless changes are announced prior to the game.
